US: threats of violence in Kenya “dramatically reduced”

Months of violent unrest which arose after the election of December 27th last year has been dramatically reduced following an agreement between the President, Mwai Kibaki and the opposition leader, Raila Odinga. Earlier this month, a power sharing pact was enshrined in law. Since then, levels of violence have decreased, although there are still pockets of turbulence.

The United States is advising travelers to continue to “evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing, potential threats from terrorism and crime.” The Peace Corps program in Kenya is still suspended, but the situation is under review, the State Department said.
