Crowded conditions increase risks of diseaseA few days ago, the WHO announced that Influenza A (H1N1) (previously called swine flu) has become pandemic. This means that it’s actively spreading through multiple populations around the world, and is being transmitted from human to human.

The WHO representative seemed almost apologetic about this announcement, and was careful to mention that “in most people” the flu is mild, in fact generally it seems to be milder than the normal seasonal flu we’re all used to. The most worrying thing about it H1N1 is that, unlike previous pandemics, it seems to be more dangerous for younger people than those over 60, who seem to have some immunity.

So should you cancel your trip to foreign parts and opt for a staycation? I don’t think that as things stand this is necessary. The countries most affected so far are the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Australia, Chile and Japan. So if you aren’t visiting any of those (or if you live there now), a vacation is most likely taking you away from the current hotspots. Check out the BBC Map for the current situation, it’s updated daily.
