Advance flight booking? Check 2 WEEKS before you fly

August 21st, 2008 at 11:02am Under Air travel tickets+ Travel tips

Many flights are being cancelledMany flights are being cancelled by airlines as they fight to stay in profit. These cancellations are not overnight decisions, even though you may not find out about them until it’s too late to book anything else at a similar price.

The Terms and Conditions of your contract with the airline may not protect you as much as you would expect, so it’s worth your while to read them and make sure you understand exactly what you are entitled to in the event of your flight being canceled.

In any case, if you have booked a flight some time before you actually intend to fly, you should take the precaution of phoning the airline (not the estate agent or other person through whom you did the booking) to check that the flight is still scheduled. Don’t rely on the airline to do this for you. Increasing numbers of people are being offered nothing but a refund of their ticket price.

To avoid disappointment, ring the airline far enough ahead so that you have at least a chance of finding another flight at the lower “book ahead” price, if your original flight is canceled.

Flying Qantas? Double check before you leave

August 14th, 2008 at 11:19pm Under Air travel tickets+ Travel tips+ travel news

Qantas AirwaysThe latest twist in the story of Qantas Airways came after the announcement last Tuesday that six B737-400s would be removed from service while the airline cross-checks maintenance records, resulting in three flights being canceled.

Following this, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority announced on Wednesday that it would be expanding its investigation of Qantas maintenance records which it undertook after three separate incidents. The first, which was widely reported, occurred when an explosion tore a hole in the side of one of its planes, forcing an emergency landing at Manila. That was on July 25th. Two other flights have been forced to return to their departure airports, one because of a problem with the landing gear, and the other after traffic controllers witnessed fluid “streaming from a wing.”

Bearing all these things in mind, it would be wise to double check that your flight has not been canceled before you leave for the airport.

Traveling by air? Take some lunch or plenty of cash

August 8th, 2008 at 10:16pm Under Air travel tickets+ Travel tips

US Airways is now charging for inflight food and drinkOne unexpected consequence of the rise in fuel prices, and the knock-on effect on many airlines, is a change in policy.

Many airlines have made the decision to charge for everything provided to customers in the way of food and drink - and the prices some companies are charging will add up quickly, especially if you are traveling as a family, or for a flight of more than an hour or two. How does $7 for a sandwich, $5 for a snack box and $2 for a bottle of coke - or even water grab you?

Savvy train travelers have been taking a picnic for the journey with them for a while now. Maybe it’s time to consider doing the same if you’re traveling by air.
