More than 50 years ago, it was possible to travel from India to Bangladesh by rail. This route was closed after increasingly fierce clashes between the mainly Muslim Bangladeshi population and Indian Hindus.
But now the line is set to reopen, after an agreement was signed today by Bangladeshi Communication Secretary, Mahbub ur Rahman and India’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Pinaki Ranjan Chakravarty. Tickets for the “Friendship Train,” as it has been called, are on sale for journeys starting from 14th April, the Bengali New Year.

In today’s fast-paced world, trains often get forgotten when you’re planning a vacation, even though rushing around at breakneck speed doesn’t generally give you that relaxed holiday feeling you are most likely looking for. But just because you don’t usually go by train, that’s no reason not to at least consider the idea.
When you fly, all you see is clouds, plus the occasional aerial view if you’re close enough to the window to look out. On a train, though, you travel through areas which are often outstandingly beautiful, and have time to savor the view.
AskMen, the Men’s Portal, has just published a top ten trains list. The results are listed here, but for the comments as to why each is best, you will have to go to the original article (link below). Anyway, here’s the list:
- TGV, France
- Japan Railways Group, Japan
- Eurostar, London to Paris
- ICE/NachtZug, Germany
- TAV, Italy
- Russian Railways, Russia
- KTX, South Korea
- AVE, Spain
- Great Southern Rail Limited, Australia
- VR, Finland
For more information, see Askmen’s Top Ten Trains list.

Easter’s just around the corner, a time when the kids are off school, Spring weather’s in the air and a visit to Grandma is just the thing.
You can save yourself the hassle of queuing for tickets at the station AND save a packet on the fare by just booking your train tickets online
in advance – so you can buy more Easter Eggs with what you save – or maybe you should just keep quiet about the money you saved on the trainfare! It’s a great way to go, and one less thing to worry about when you’re off on your family visit.
