Four teenagers, Rebecca Logie, 19, Lizzie Pincock, 19, Indira Swann, 18, Emily Sadler, 19 and their team leader, Sarah Howard, 26 were killed when their bus was in a road accident at Jipijapa on the road from Quito in Ecuador to Puerto Lopez. They were just beginning a four month stay. They intended to carry out several weeks of volunteer work before continuing their journey along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu.

Although roads in Ecuador are labeled “hazardous” on the UK Foreign Office site, the accident occurred on part of the road which was regarded as being the “safe part”. It seems that there was a collision with a vehicle carrying sand. Most of the other occupants of the bus, one French national, 15 other Brits and the driver, an Ecuadorean, suffered some injuries.

I’d like to extend my deepest sympathy to the friends and family of those killed, and also to the people who were injured.
