T5 Stop Press: Your insurance may not cover you

If you took your travel insurance out before Heathrow Terminal 5 opened, and your bags are lost, there is no need to worry. But, if you took it out after the terminal opened, some insurance companies are saying that they will not pay out for bags lost at terminal 5.

Travel insurance is designed to protect you against “unforeseen eventualities.” Some insurance companies are saying that since Terminal 5 has opened, the problem of lost baggage is common knowledge, and so cannot be classed as unforeseen, and any policy taken out since that time does not, therefore, cover baggage loss at Heathrow Terminal 5.

Check your policy, and if it is not completely clear, check with the insurance company before you travel through Terminal 5.
