Mexican Vacations – Cultural Sites To Check Out

by Teve Torbes

If you’re planning on taking a trip to Mexico, there are literally thousands of things you can do there. One of the most interesting and fulfilling, however, is to go check out some of the numerous cultural sites that are open to the public.

One interesting and lesser known cultural site to check out is the caves in Baja that contain ancient cave paintings from indigenous peoples in the area. They’re a couple of hours drive from the U.S., so you can go there even if you aren’t planning a full-fledged trip. It’s a nice weekend trip for people from California or nearby areas – you can drive in, get a hotel nearby, and wander around in the tourist-accessible areas.

A better known cultural must-see are the interesting archeological sites left behind by the Aztecs and the Mayans. These are the famous pyramids that you’ve seen in pictures, and you can actually go to visit many of them. The Aztec ruins are located mainly around Mexico City and nearby. To see the Mayan ones, you’ll have to take a trip to the Yucatan peninsula – either one of those places is a great spot for tourists to go visit, so you can either focus on one or do a split vacation. Many of the pyramids have sculptures and other artifacts on display, and some areas are fully preserved ancient cities.

It’s well worth a look – the buildings are impressive, especially given the technology used to build them. One of the best preserved to take a look at is Chichen Itza in the Yucatan – a well-preserved and partially restored site that is actually very close to Cancun, another great tourist spot where you can go and get the regular vacation activities out of the way. The cultural stuff can be a great and interesting supplement.

As one of Europe's leading cultural cities Berlin offers many museums, historic sites and other places for a memorable visit. Many landmarks remind us of the long history of Berlin, the remains of the destruction during World War II and its history when it was divided between East and West.

Even though Berlin is a large metropolis, orientating yourself in Berlin isn't hard at all. There are three prominent landmarks: the Church of Remembrance (the Gedächtniskirche), located in the West on the Kurfürstendamm, the Brandenburger Tor in the city district of Mitte, and the Fernsehturm (TV-tower) at Alexanderplatz in the

Inuit Drum Dancing of the Arctic

by Clint Leung

Like many other aboriginal cultures around the world, the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic have made use of drums in some of their traditional music for centuries. Inuit drum dancing played a part in many special occasions such as births, marriages, an Inuit boy's first hunt, changing of seasons, greetings for visitors or to honor someone who had passed away. News of these special events was spread by word of mouth and many Inuit traveled great distances to attend.

The Inuit drum called a qilaut was traditionally made from caribou skin with seal or walrus skin around the handle. Before, Inuit drum dancing was most commonly done by men

Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree

by Anon

Following the end of World War II, the people of Norway wished to signify their friendship with Britain and their thanks for protecting King Haakon VII in exile. So, since 1946, they have donated one of their finest specimens of Norwegian Spruce to Britain to become the centrepiece of the Christmas celebrations in Trafalgar Square, London.

Usually on the first Thursday in December, the Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster and the Mayor of Oslo attend a "lighting up" ceremony of 500 or so pure white lights, the traditional way of illuminating a tree in Norway. The lights are
