Family Tents Or Camping With Cabins? A Question of Style and Experience

by Jeff Crossmont

Camping trips with the family need to be carefully planned events. Rushing out to a camp location without proper thought as to accommodations risks a poor experience for all. It used to be that families either wanted the experience of "roughing it" under a tent, or wanted the extra comfort of a cabin while still being in the outdoors during the day. Now you can marry the outdoor tenting experience with additional comforts.

Tent technology, particularly for larger tents that accommodate multiple persons, has come a long way over the last few years. Interior room has been enhanced, interior room dividers provide some privacy and multiple tent access points helps relieve intrusion.

Interior Room Enhancements - Tent manufacturers have spent time addressing some of the more problematic aspects of older tent models in terms of space requirements. Interior space requirements need to deal not only with occupants but also their material storage needs. Today's Family Tents are roomier at the top, allowing for less bending inside. Dome tents in particular focus on room at the top. These tents also provide for less intrusive pole placement to allow freer movement inside. Finally, storage solutions, both elevated and on the ground, have been devised to accommodate materials without sacrificing the occupancy needs of the family.

Interior Room Privacy - Manufacturers have leapfrogged older tent specifications in this ultra important area. Newer family tents, even the three and four person models, now allow for interior dividers that can sequester space without dedicating it all to community sharing. This can be seriously important to families with young kids as well as teenagers desiring their own sense of space. Common access "hallways" allow for public space without having to tramp over someone else's area. Open up the dividers to allow to even greater family sharing and then close them off for privacy.

Multiple Access - A relatively easy fix has been the advent of multiple tent access for ingress and egress. No longer is it necessary for family members to come in and out through one portal, while disturbing others. Individual interior spaces now naturally come with individual tent access. This can mean a lot when your family is out for several nights in a row and "getting away" becomes a major requirement. Not only has ingress and egress been improved, but sightlines in the form of multiple "window" flaps help provide interior spaces with their own private views.

Family Tent technology has significantly improved the family camping experience and now makes the decision to spend the night outdoors under a family tent an easier choice. Showers and toilets aside, privacy, space and comfort have been added to the "Family Tent" experience in a way that will add enjoyment for the family camping trip. Family Tent models allow for anywhere from three to eight persons or more comfortably without the requirement of spending your entire camping budget on your tent accommodations.

My Perfect Campsite

by Chuck Fitzgerald

It's the time of year to beat the heat and head for higher elevation. For many people that means loading up the RV, grabbing the boat and finding a campground by the lake. While these two styles are quite different, they are both perfect. Let's take a look at what makes a campsite perfect for me-and perhaps for you.

To start with, there are two general types of campsites, the first being established campsites. These campgrounds
